Massively Parallel Processing enhances spatial queries

Netezza SpatialPosted by James Karioki 06 Jul, 2010 22:54:44
Netezza Spatial. Netezza Spatial® is an extension to the Netezza appliance. Netezza Spatial simplifies the process of bringing together location and business data in a business intelligence environment seamless integration and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data providing a seamless integration and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data..

Netezza Spatial allows companies to seamlessly analyze both corporate and locatin-based data within the same database with blazing query performance and low administrative burden.

Location intelligence with Netezza Spatial presents a significant opportunity for organizations in nearly every industry to leverage location data as part of their everyday decision making to impact their business' bottom lines. Any analysis relating to business processes such as customer relationship management, targeted marketing promotions, service optimization, risk management and operational efficiency, can benefit from location data to make the best, most data-driven decisions. These are a few examples of how businesses in various industry verticals benefit from the value provided by Netezza Spatial.

Re-insurance companies use location intelligence to enable clients to assess the risk associated with their insurance portfolios and identify sources of risk accumulation across those portfolios. They use spatial querying to analyze large volumes of spatial data containing catastrophe information on multiple dimensions such as weather, wildfire and earthquake risk from different sources.

Wireless service providers analyze data from network operations systems to determine areas of less than adequate coverage in their service regions, indicated by a higher than usual concentration of dropped calls. The analysis helps in determining the best locations for cell towers and optimizing network operations.

Location is everything when it comes to retail and retailers know its importance in making or breaking the success of a store. Retailer chains typically have GIS and real estate groups that plan store expansions in new geographic areas.
Because traditional data warehouses are not able to easily accommodate spatial data processing, these groups typically have to deploy and maintain their own infrastructure for location intelligence. Site selection queries on these systems can take hours or days to run even on limited spatial and demographic data.

By leveraging Netezza’s proprietary Massively Parallel Processing capababilites, Netezza Spatial has provided the capability to tremendously reduce the amount of time required to analyze data and reach a decision by between ten and a hundred times more than traditional tools.

Welcome

Business IntelligencePosted by James Karioki 30 Jun, 2008 22:54:25
Welcome to my Business Intelligence blog.

Here I will share experiences during my involvement working on Business Intelligence projects.

The main tools I use for Business Intelligence projects are:

Netezza Performance Server

Netezza is a computer hardware/software company, whose primary product is a Massively Parallel Processing( MPP) data warehouse appliance.

Netezza is widely credited for either inventing or bringing renewed attention to the data warehouse appliance category, depending upon whether one regards long-time data warehouse technology vendor Teradata as having been in the data warehouse appliance category all along.

The greatest distinguishing feature of Netezza technology is its reliance on FPGAs and PowerPC processors rather than standard disk controller chips and Intel CPUs. This changed dramatically in 2009 when Netezza launched it's a brand new appliance code named 'TwinFin' to the market. The Twinfin appliance uses standard IBM blades.
